Sump pump

Sump pump

A sump pump is a specialized pump used to remove water that has accumulated in a sump pit, typically found in basements or crawl spaces of homes or buildings. Its primary function is to prevent flooding or dampness by effectively pumping out excess water to a designated drainage area or sewer system.

Key Components and Operation:

  1. Sump Pit: This is a small, pit-like reservoir or basin dug into the ground below the main floor level of a building. It collects water that seeps in through the foundation, natural groundwater, or from rain or snowmelt.
  2. Pump Mechanism: The sump pump is installed inside the sump pit. It consists of a motorized pump, typically electrically powered, and a float switch or sensor that activates the pump when water reaches a certain level in the pit.
  3. Discharge Pipe: Once activated, the sump pump pumps water out of the sump pit through a discharge pipe. This pipe leads the water away from the building, either draining it into a storm sewer, a dry well, or a designated area where it can safely dissipate without causing flooding or damage.
